A Letter to a Daughter

Darling,

you’re sitting on the floor right now

toes folded into your lumpy feet.

Your bangs are brushing your brows

and your smile is brushing paint

over canvases of inspiration.

Your life is waiting ahead of you.

Your masterpiece is getting started.

But darling,

we don’t have to worry about that now.

You’re holding the new puppy –

we figured new things must come in pairs,

like shoes –

and you’re petting his head.

You know already what you want.
All I ask is that you don’t ever let him go.

Always appreciate those things which are easy to love,

but never let go of the brush, either.

Not all masterpieces are priceless,

that’s what my mother told me.

Darling,

this picture of you,

in this moment, doing nothing but loving –

not because you were told to love,

not because it makes your eyes sparkle brighter –

is the very masterpiece I’ve always wanted to paint.

You are inspiration just by being.

One day you’ll flex your toes and you’ll walk,

but we don’t have to worry about that now.

You’re preoccupied with things much more relevant

than the future.
